Use, Maintenance & Care

Put on a breathing mask to prevent the inhalation of mold or mildew spores. Lay the canvas tent out flat in a dry sunny area. Using a soft and stiff hairbrush or toothbrush, brush the mold debris and mildew from the material. Wash the affected area with any good quality mold remover solution with hot water. And/or rinse with a solution of 1 cup of lemon juice and 1 cup of salt to hot water. If you catch mold in the early stages you can save your tent. We strongly suggest you to look for Mold Mildew Stain Remover which can be found online. Follow the instructions on the label. We have found it to be safe, easy, and effective to use. However, keep in mind that this treatment will degrade some of the canvas water repellency. The affected area can be retreated with a silicone based water repellent solution as it wouldn’t clog the tiny pores in the canvas and cause it to lose its breathability. Replace the tent if it is the black mold and canvas tent fabric is falling apart as there is not much you can do at that point.

The lifespan of your tent is very dependent upon camping conditions such as air pollution, ultraviolet radiation, natural dirt (bird droppings, sand, salt water) and domestic dirt (cooking stains, soda, wine, sun cream), as these all limit the lifespan of your cotton canvas tent. Take good care of your tent and it will last longer (minimum up to 6 months)

Golden role: Never store or pack your tent and ropes away wet, damp or dirty. If you own a canvas cotton tent, make sure to never store it either wet or damp. The moisture trapped inside will make the life of tent shorter. At times, you don’t have much of a choice but to pack it; in damp condition, make sure you hang it up to dry within a day or two. Otherwise, fungus can affect the tent leading to tiny little black spots all over your tent which are permanent. Pitch your tent properly: Simple yet effective way to ensure enhancing your tent’s life span. The canvas can become strained If the tent isn’t pitched correctly which would eventually lead towards damage. Keep it clean: To remove marks, use a soft brush or sponge with fresh water and mild detergent only and rinse with clean water. Allow to dry thoroughly. Wipe down all metal surfaces with fresh water after use. After beach use or wet conditions treat all zips and metal components with silicon spray. Remove the stains as soon as they appear, its way easier to brush off the dirt and dried mud when the tent is dry by using a scrubbing brush. Leakage: Cotton canvas fabric normally expands when exposed to wet environment to make itself waterproof. There might be a possibility that it may leak a bit around seams when you set it up for the first time. The cotton fibers will swell and close up any tiny holes that might cause the leakage again. Don’t freak out, it’s totally okay as this will no longer happen again because of the natural cotton phenomenon. Ventilation: Make absolutely sure you store your tent in a place which has ventilation to let some air through. Due to insufficient ventilation, fungus can affect the canvas. It is important to store your tent dry so no fungus or other stains can appear.

If you own a canvas cotton tent, make sure to never store the tent, ropes and stakes either wet or damp. The moisture trapped inside will make the life of tent shorter. At times, you don’t have much of a choice but to pack it; in damp condition, make sure you hang it up to dry within a day or two. Otherwise, fungus can affect the tent leading to tiny little black spots all over your tent which are permanent. This occurs when the canvas at the bottom of the tent is in constant contact with moist ground. The canvas never dries out and eventually will begin to rot or decay in the areas of contact. Even if there is no rain, this can be caused by moisture from dew. Prevention: For extend use, make sure the tent is placed in an area that is well drained, dry and properly ventilated to let some air through. Due to insufficient ventilation, fungus can affect the canvas. It is important to store your tent dry so no fungus or other stains can appear. It could be placed on sand, gravel, or a slated wooden platform. Extended use on grassy areas or moist soil should be avoided.

Camping tents can easily become a victim of mold and mildew. If your tent is not cleaned, dry and stored properly when you put it away, mold and mildew can be a pesky problem. Mildew is more prone to grow in humid climates in dark or shady areas. Prevention: Take the tent out for cleaning and retreating from time to time. A typical cleaning and retreatment can require a few hours on a sunny day, a few times a year. Let it air out and place it where it can receive direct sunlight for a couple of hours.

Our canvas tents are much less susceptible to UV deterioration than many synthetic fabrics but over time it will eventually degrade the canvas. Ultraviolet damage to tent fabric is caused by excessive exposure to sunlight. The first sign of sun damage will be a fading of the color of the fabric, followed by a deterioration of the fabric and threads, often near the seams but sometimes in the middle of the panel. Prevention: Avoid leaving your tent set up in direct sun for extended periods. Also, we recommend to use a “rain fly” as it also protects the tent top from burn holes, slides the snow, and is another barrier in the rain.

Breathability: Canvas tents can be better suited for long camping trips because of their heavy duty, breathable and durable materials. Simply put, they are going to last longer than nylon or other synthetic materials. Four Season Tent: Canvas tents generally perform better in winter conditions. Heavy duty canvas fabric will block out the cold and wind better than nylon. They are also very functional during the summer– it is a 4 season tent for all your camping needs. Durability: If you buy the right canvas tent, you can go years before you need to replace it. Small holes and ripped seams in a canvas tent are also easier to patch up than holes and damaged seams in synthetic material tents.

Alpha Wall Tent FAQs

Cotton canvas is our preferred choice of material. It is breathable, it allows a little airflow for drying out the dampness and humidity inside the tent, it is waterproof and less prone to condensation. A good quality, breathable, tightly woven, 100% cotton duck canvas is at the core of every White Duck Outdoors tent. We use 100% Cotton Canvas, 10.10 oz. Double Fill Army Duck Fabric.

Our wall tents come in four different sizes i.e. 10’x12’, 12’x14’, 14’x16’ and 16’x20’ to cater to all kind of families or groups. The best way to determine correct tent size is to figure out what you are bringing with you. Ensure plenty room for accessories and ample space to move around. If you are still unsure of the size, please contact us at info@whiteduckoutdoors.com

Our Wall tent is made up of a heavier and higher quality canvas, we have tested our canvas fabric at an independent textile lab and it turned out to be 15% stronger than the canvas fabric used by our competitors. A distinctive feature of our wall tent is that it comes as a complete package that includes the frame structure, extra windows, groundsheet and sod cloth/skirting that comes with the tent unlike our competitors who sell them separately at much higher prices.

  • Water-resistant fabric is the lowest level of water protection as it is only able to resist water penetration to some extent but not entirely. Tightly woven fabrics will offer a degree of water resistance, as it takes some time for the water to seep through the material.
  • Water-repellent cannot be easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a breathable finish impregnated as surface coating. It beads on the outside instead and fall off the fabric.
  • Waterproof material is impervious to water, however, it is impossible to breathe in.
We have used silicone based chemical treatment similar to famous Sunforger treatment which has been the leader in the fabric treatment camping industry because of its ability to retain the canvas natural ability to breathe without contributing to the fabric’s disintegration. This results in much higher water repellency and protection against UV rays, mold and mildew, as opposed to the traditional wax treatment which adds extra weight and inconsistent water repellency. Together with the material itself, canvas treatments have become a critical factor in determining a high quality tent.

All of our canvas wall tents are available in 4 different sizes with two unique fabric options to choose from i.e. Water Repellent and Fire Water Repellent. They are also mold and mildew resistant.

Yes, all of our canvas wall tents include heavy duty and durable aluminum frame and angle kits.

We use top rated military grade YKK Zippers on both canvas and mesh doors to ensure maximum durability and functionality.

Yes, all of our tents come with a heavy duty free floating 16 oz. PVC groundsheet to fit the tent and keep the elements & insects out while most of the wall tent providers charge extra money for it.

Yes, all of our wall tents have pre-installed stove jack so you can choose a stove or your liking, or save money by using a stove you have at home. The stove jack has a standard pattern of 5” and 6” which could be cut with any scissor. We have used heat resistant, silicon coated material with a canvas weather flap allowing for a 5” or 6” round pipe to fit perfectly with the pitch of the roof. It is designed to withstand extremely high temperatures and to protect tent fabric from melting in direct contact with a hot stove pipe.

It depends on what you plan on using it for, weight, volume, strength, and performance will determine the stove type and size. Volume determines the log size and burn time.

A 10-15 inch material sewn in around the bottom of a tent to provide a seal to the ground and prevent wind and rain from entering the tent. We use heavy duty 16 oz. vinyl which is UV resistant and weatherproof to soil down your tent from all the elements. It is compatible with any terrain and weather condition, also, easier to clean and can go inside or outside of the tent as per your convenience.

Alpha Wall Tent features four durable, all-weather (6 in 16’x20’), 3-layer storm, large triangular distinctive windows. The windows are 3 layered with a flap that you can either roll up for circulation, better ventilation and clear views or close to stay protected during heavy snow or storm. Most of the wall tent suppliers offer one standard window with the tent and charge an additional cost.

There is one canvas door with bug mesh at the front which have an additional buckle fastening system with canvas over flap across the door panels for extra protection to keep the tent dry during heavy rain and strong winds.

If you follow the instructions, it will hardly take 30-40 minutes for the first time to set up your tent. You will need at least two people as the frame and tent fabric is heavy.

Yes, they are practically designed in such a way to let you stay inside the tent for extended period of time. However, make sure to clean your tent every now and then to avoid getting mold or mildew.

Yes, we provide zippered waterproof polyester storage bag with carry strap to protect and store your tent, poles and toolkit. Most of the companies charge extra money for the bag.

Yes, they do come with Stakes and Polyester UV resistant Dura rope with a proprietary elasticated shock absorber bungee cord system.

Awnings carry the roof line out over the front of the tent, porches are the roof and walls out in front of the tent and cook shack are the roof walls and another end sewn in.

During our modern firearm elk season, we experienced some 40+ mph winds during a couple of nights and our canvas tents hold up well. The bungee straps that comes with the tents tie down ropes are designed to handle heavy winds.

All of our tents have good ventilation options;

  • The tent vents really well as it has 4 windows (6 windows in 16x20 size).
  • Given that it is canvas, the tent also vents well compared to if it was a plastic product that would entrap moisture.

Yes, you can buy fly sheet and porch separately for added protection, they are available in all four sizes as tent i.e. 10x12, 12x14, 14x16 and 16x20.

The best way to fix burn holes is to sew a patch over them.

Propane heaters put out a considerable amount of water vapor when they burn and build condensation inside canvas tent. Good ventilation and airflow is an absolute necessity not only to help prevent condensation, but also for safety reasons. The heater should have carbon monoxide detector but try to avoid running it all night while sleeping and it should work okay.

If you want to leave your tent up in the winter for an extended period of time in heavy snow, no internal frame can withstand heavy snow accumulation. There is no guarantee that your tent will survive a heavy wet snow load and are likely to get damaged and frames getting destroyed. White Duck Outdoors does not specify any safe amount of accumulation of ice or snow on a tent. The larger the canvas, the greater the potential snow load, and thus the greater the possibility for structural collapse. To mitigate accumulation in winter conditions, we always recommend our customers to get an extra pair of snow load poles for added strength and a tent stove which will heat the tent and cause fresh snow falling on the canvas to melt and run off, managing the temperature to some extent. Also, use a soft brush to periodically brush snow off the canvas, or gently beat the snow off from inside.

A bell tent is a human shelter for inhabiting, traveling or leisure. The design is a simple structure, supported by a single central pole, covered with cotton canvas.

Our bell tent can be placed in snow cold area. Since the tent comes with vent, you can place a stove with chimney to keep the temperature inside the tent warm. Our canvas is mold/mildew resistant but we strongly recommend that you store or fold the tent bone dry or it will develop mold.

Cotton canvas is a breathable fabric and might let some water seep in through and leak around the seams in the initial stage or when you use it for the first time, after the canvas has been wet once this will no longer happen because of the cotton expanding. We have used breathable finish to attain water, mold and UV resistance on all of our canvas tents. We avoid using wax to waterproof the tent as the fabric will lose its breathability.

The zipped in floor/ sewn-in floor comes with the tent, however, you do have to purchase an additional roof tarp or roof fly if you need more protection.

Our bell tents can be used year-round, but not designed for extreme winter mountaineering or heavy snow accumulations.

Our Family Explorer tent is made up of a heavier and higher quality canvas, we have tested our cotton canvas fabric at an independent textile lab and it turned out to be 15% stronger than the canvas fabric used by our competitors. We use our premium cotton canvas fabric not only for the tent but also for the loops that attach the organizer inside the tent, minimizing risk of water penetration. However our competitors use polyester/ nylon webbing which is not as water resistant. Unlike our competitors, we have used 10.10 oz. fabric on walls (same as tent fabric) instead of the eight and 1/2 ounce which makes our tent a beast; sturdy and more durable. A distinctive feature of our family explorer tent is the silver-coated 10 oz. canvas roof which blocks sun and is heat resistant and has superior water, mildew and heat resistance. It makes the inside temperature much cooler in hot summer days and won’t blind you in the morning looking up at roof laying on your back. Our competitors are using a standard canvas ceiling fabric. We use top rated waterproof YKK zippers not only on doors but also on windows to ensure maximum durability and functionality. Our competitors only use them on doors.

It will do better than any other type of tent. It will be as dust proof as you keep it. Just keep in mind that there should be no open flame, in or near the tent.

You have to put in all the stakes, make sure to unzip the doors and windows. After assembling the poles on top and putting the stakes in, try to lift the top a little to get air inside the tent before installing the side poles. This should reduce the vacuum you experience when raising it up.

It has a bathtub style groundsheet that stops the rain water from penetrating inside the flooring. The bathtub style comes in handy if there is a puddle outside, ensuring no penetration from the groundsheet. Our competitors use a sewn-in groundsheet, this is great for normal conditions, and however, in rain it poses a risk of water penetrating the inside of the tent. It is a completely closed unit.

Stake loops are made up of heavy duty bungee cord and are reinforced.

Headroom height of family explorer is 6.5 ft. which is all around.

Our Family Explorer tents do not have flame retardant finish. They only come with Water Repellent option.

During heavy rain, we highly recommend a fly of some sort, this keeps the damaging rays of the sun from degrading the canvas. Also useful for helping snow to slide off better in the winter and by trapping a layer of air between the fly and canvas top helps insulate the tent in cold weather. Unfortunately, we do not supply fly with our Family Explorer tent range.

Our family explorer tents do not have stock jack installed, but it has large doors and windows which could be used to ventilate the smoke.

If your trip is short; 1-3 days and want an easy quick to setup tent, you should consider our Bell tents and Family explorer cabin tents. If you are going to camp for extended periods of time, you should consider our wall tents. The wall tents take more time to erect, are a little bulkier to store, and require two people to set up. Once up, they are roomier because of the steep sidewalls and tall ceilings and offer some added comforts like adding up the porch in front of your tent for added space.

We do not put a stove Jack in this style tent and therefore the propane is the appropriate way to do it. The side windows will easily vent out the propane during night.

The rearview is actually the same as the front view. The roof height is 6'5". Our staking is done with bungee cords instead of webbing and allows it to hold up better against high winds. It's better than any other tent available in the market.

Yes absolutely! Our family explorer tent is waterproof and will withstand much more than 5 months. We don’t sell fly sheets with this model but if you are planning to set up the tent for an extended period, fly sheet is a good option to consider.
