Making the most out of your time in the great outdoors means being prepared for everything and packing strategically so you can spend less time worrying and more time having fun. Packing a few extra pieces of multipurpose material in your camping gear is always worth the extra weight and setup. Whether you’re a new camper compiling the foundational pieces of your setup or an avid camper needing to update some gear, consider a heavy-duty waterproof tarp.
Waterproof tarps are a camping essential and one of the most versatile pieces of gear you could have. From providing reliable shelter to weather and wind resistance to acting as a ground cover and even an emergency safety signal– tarps are indispensable for any camping trip.
Heavy duty Waterproof Tarpaulin
When out camping and fully exposed to the elements, it is crucial to keep yourself and your gear protected and as dry as possible. While a tent itself may be waterproofed and have a UV and mildew-resistant finish, adding the extra layer of a heavy-duty tarp does wonders in regards to bulking up the protection. Waterproof tarpaulin’s ability to repel water enhances the durability of the material and makes it a practical, long-lasting solution for all kinds of applications.
Heavy-duty tarps can be used as a ground tarp to protect the bottom of a tent, a rainfly to shield above a tent, a picnic blanket, a workspace, an emergency shelter and so much more. Because outdoor tarps are so often used for the purpose of keeping equipment covered and protected from the elements, picking a high-quality and heavy-duty tarpaulin is the best option for all your camping needs.
Different Tarp Materials
Not all tarps are the same! Pay close attention to the material and features of the tarp you’re purchasing to ensure it will suit your needs. Here are a few types of tarpaulin to keep in mind:
- Polyurethane Tarp
A polyurethane tarp is made from woven polyethylene and coated with polyethylene laminate, which makes it waterproof and durable. This weather-resistant material has many uses as covers for outdoor equipment. Rainfly, ground tarps, tarps for boat covers, outdoor furniture tarps, and various commercial tarps are just a few uses for this awesome material.
- Cotton Tarp
Cotton canvas makes an excellent choice for all camping and outdoor purposes. At White Duck, all of our tarps are made with our DYNADUCK premium 100% army duck cotton canvas. These natural, tightly woven fibers create a breathable material treated for waterproofing and UV and mold resistance. Cotton canvas is also often used as tarps for boat covers, outdoor furniture tarps, car covers for outdoors, and more.
Some Features You May Find on Tarps
- Waterproof coating
- Tarps may include metal grommets on all four corners for staking and securing them down with guylines.
- UV protective coating
- Mold and mildew-resistant coating
So What Are Tarps Used For?
Camping Tarps
Most heavy-duty tarpaulin can enhance your overall outdoor setup and be used specifically as camping tarps. The addition of a ground tarp to your equipment can act as an extra layer of protection and insulation for your tent floor. Similarly, using a heavy duty waterproof tarp as a shield from rain and snow –known as a rain fly– is highly recommended for campers who want to keep their tent in tip-top shape for the long run.
Rain and snow aren’t the only things you’ll want protection from in the outdoors! Intense rays from the sun are constantly shining down and affecting everything from our own skin to our camping equipment. This summer, up your sun protection with a strong UV tarp. This can be used as a shade awning over the entrance to your tent, or over the picnic table at your campsite. It could also act as an extra layer of shade over your tent for maximum coverage.
Safety Tarps
You never know when an emergency might strike, and out in the wilderness anything can happen. Campers know to be extra prepared when away from amenities and cities, which means having extra precautionary materials for protection against the elements. If for some reason you find yourself in need of shelter, having a heavy duty waterproof tarp that’s large enough to cover you completely in is a smart things to have on hand. Additionally, these can be used as a signal for help, waving them in the air or laying them out flat to be seen from the air.
Covers For Outdoors Equipment
Buying a multipurpose super heavy duty tarp cover is an investment you’ll be glad you made. Waterproof tarpaulin can come in handy in many ways outside of the camping world. If treated with a sun-resistant coating, UV tarps provide optimal shade in the summer heat, meaning they can be used as a shade awning in the backyard or on the beach, a car cover for your favorite classic vehicle, as a furniture tarp, or even as tarps for boat covers.
Other Uses
- Tablecloth
- Picnic blanket
- Surface area to do other tasks
- Board or card game blanket
- Temporary shelter
- Tarp for painting
- Car covers for outdoor vehicles
- Outdoor furniture tarp
Tarps come in all shapes and sizes. If the tarp will be used as cover for outdoors equipment and camping, it’s important to select one that is slightly larger than the object it will be paired with to ensure full coverage and protection from the elements.
Cleaning
Cleaning heavy duty waterproof tarpaulin is simple to do, and only requires a few basic steps to ensure longevity and effectiveness. Firstly, lay the tarp flat on a clean dry surface and use a brush or broom to remove any loose debris. To remove stains and cleanse the cotton fibers, mix warm water with mild soap and gently lather and scrub with a soft-bristled brush, focusing mostly on the dirtiest spots. Try to avoid using harsh chemicals as these will eat away at and damage the protective waterproof coating. Rinse thoroughly with water and leave out to dry completely– ideally in the sun– before folding it to store in a cool, dry place until next time. Like with all camping gear, try to keep up regular maintenance on all your heavy duty tarpaulin products and other covers for outdoors items to improve condition and extend the lifespan of your gear!
Tarps are extremely beneficial to your camping setup as they keep your tent clean and protected from the elements. In turn, this improves the lifespan of your tarp so you can get the best use out of it for years to come and continue making memories in the great outdoors!
